Halal is a large (USD 580 billion) industry and fast growing due to the size of the Muslim population but also the global demand by non-Muslims as Halal is a symbol of quality & safety. The Halal food industry has become a mainstream industry, which has been championed by multinational food companies worldwide. Today the pharmaceutical and cosmetics industry is also recognising the value of Halal for its customers, which has resulted in the production of Halal certified pharmaceuticals and cosmetics by both local and multination manufacturers in especially Muslim countries.
Halal is expanding along the value chain, upstream towards animal food, downstream towards food services, as well as the transportation, storage and handling of Halal products. This trend is supported by an international Halal standard, developed under IHI Alliance Ltd (www.ihialliance.org).
The basic principle of Halal Logistics is to ensure physical segregation of Halal cargo from non-Halal cargo. This is to avoid cross contamination, avoiding the possibility of making mistakes and ensure that the logistics system is aligned with the perception & expectations of the various Muslim consumers. Halal Logistics ensures that the Halal integrity is protected along the supply chain.
